In the Far South of Tasmania, the forest parts to reveal a spectacular open buttongrass plain. This special habitat is home to a unique range of flowers, birds and animals, a community found nowhere else. In the distance, the sometimes snow capped  Southern Ranges loom.

Your modern 2 bedroom cabin is a comfortable eco-experience with solar electricity and hot water,  wood heating and is free of distractions like TV and in room phones. The perfect place to base for exploring the natural beauty of Tasmania's Far South.

Button Grass Retreat due for completion December 2011.

It is expected that the property will be available for visitors from December 2011. Please re-visit this site periodically for more information.

Progress Updates:

  • Update 1 June 2011_
    The building is constructed to frame and external cladding. Underground services expected to be burried end of June.
  • Update 9 July 2011_
    The building structure is completed and the kitchen, wiring and plumbing is installed. Underground services are layed. Furnishings are being purchsed
  • Update 21 July 2011
    Expanded to a two bedroom cabin. The second room will be manufactured during the next month. This will delay delivery of the structure until early September
  • Update 18 August 2011
    Renewable energy system components have been purchased
  • Update 1 September
    Water tanks installed. Site preparation completed. Underground services layed.
  • Update 26 Sept 2011
    Building modules delivered to site. During unloading, the crane boom breaks. Buildings, trucks and 2 cranes stranded onsite. Minor damage to buildings.
    Project set back by at least one week.
  • Update 30 Sept 2011
    Cranes, trucks etc finally removed from site. Building modules temporarily placed on ground adjacent to the site. Final lift into position scheduled for Monday . Guest bookings now available from December 1st.
  • Update 1 October
    Ida Bay Railway recommences operations for this coming season.
  • Update 1 November
    Modules are now in place. Walls being extended to ground, ramp and deck being added 
  • Update 15 November.
    Building completed. Painting touch up. Instalation commenced of solar electrics, waster water pipes etc
  • Update 18 November
    Builders leaving, inside photos as shown below
  • Update 5 December
    Installed wind generator
    Resurfaced roadway
    Started the plumbing connections
  • Update 10 December
    Furniture arrives
    Artwork hung
  • Update 15 December
    Wind and Solar electricity is all working.
    Hot shower works but still a few plumbing items to be finished off
    Woodshed built
    Final clean
  • First guest arrives this afternoon ! :)
